Does Skool have a free plan?
No. On October 22, 2026, Skool's pricing page shows two paid plans:
- Hobby: $9 a month ($7.50 on yearly billing), 10% transaction fee.
- Pro: $99 a month ($82 on yearly billing), 2.9% transaction fee.
The "Try for free" buttons start a trial. The page description reads "Get started for $9/month with a 14-day free trial. Cancel anytime." The page does not say whether a card is required for the trial.
Some Skool communities are free for their members to join, as Skool's About page notes. That is the creator's choice of price, not a free plan for the creator.
Free plan, free trial, free to start: three different things
- Free plan: $0 a month with no end date. You may still pay a share of your sales.
- Free trial: full access for a set number of days, then a paid plan.
- Free to start: no subscription at all; the platform earns only a share of each sale.
Most lists of "free Skool alternatives" mix the three. The difference matters: a free trial gives you two weeks, a free plan gives you time, and "free to start" can end up costing more than a subscription once you sell.
Options with no monthly fee
From each platform's pricing page, checked on October 22, 2026:
| Platform | Monthly fee | Cut of your sales | What the page lists | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Systeme.io Free | $0, no end date | 0% platform fee; payments through Stripe or PayPal | 1 community, 1 course (500 students), 2,000 contacts, 1 domain, affiliate program; no credit card required | Processes up to $10,000 in total sales; next plan (Startup) is $17 a month |
| Whop | $0 | 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card payment; +1.5% international cards; +1% currency conversion | Payments, financing and tax tools (its Coaching & courses page), and the Whop app for iOS and Android | Community and course tools are not described on the public pages we checked |
| Patreon | $0 | 10% of what you earn, plus payment processing, currency conversion and payout fees | Membership tiers, digital products, chats, DMs, comments, livestreaming | Processing and payout fees are not quantified on the pricing page; no course builder listed |
What each one costs on $1,000 of monthly sales
Assume 20 payments of $50, all on domestic cards:
- Systeme.io Free: $0 to Systeme.io. You pay your processor's own fee; at Stripe's standard US card rate of 2.9% + 30¢, that would be $35.
- Whop: $27 (2.7%) + $6 (20 × 30¢) = $33, before any optional service such as tax collection (listed at 2% when enabled).
- Patreon: $100 (10%), plus processing and payout fees not shown on the page.
- For reference, Skool Hobby: $9 + $100 = $109. Learnea Starter: $29 + $50 + $35 Stripe = $114.
On pure cost, the free options win at this level. The question is whether they give you the community and course space you need.
When free stops being the low-cost option
A $0 subscription is not always the lowest total. Compare at higher sales, with the same $50 payments on domestic cards:
| Monthly sales | Whop (2.7% + 30¢) | Systeme.io Startup ($17) + Stripe 2.9% + 30¢ | Skool Hobby ($9 + 10%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $33 | $52 | $109 |
| $5,000 | $165 | $192 | $509 |
| $10,000 | $330 | $367 | $1,009 |
Two lessons. First, a 10% cut grows with you: on $10,000 a month, Patreon's 10% alone is $1,000, before its other fees. Second, Systeme.io's free plan has a ceiling ($10,000 in total sales, per its page), so plan for its paid tier if the community works. Check on each platform what happens when you reach a limit before you build on it.
Before you build on a free platform
- Payments: which processor takes the money, and what it charges per payment.
- Limits: members, courses, students, contacts or total sales caps.
- Your members: can you export their names and emails if you move later?
- Branding: does the platform's name appear on your pages?
Free trials (not free plans)
If you want to test a full community platform before paying, these trials were listed on October 22, 2026:
| Platform | Trial | First paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| Skool | 14 days (card requirement not stated) | Hobby, $9/month + 10% |
| Learnea | 14 days | Starter, $29/month + 5% (Stripe fees on top) |
| Heartbeat | 14 days, no credit card | Build, $49/month + 5%, up to 350 members |
| Podia | 14 days, no credit card | Mover, $49/month + 5% |
| Circle | 14 days, no credit card | Professional, $89/month billed annually + 2% |
| Mighty Networks | 14 days, no credit card (trial runs on the Growth plan) | Launch, $95/month + 2% |
| Thinkific | 30 days (no free plan, per its FAQ) | Start, $109/month |
Learnea is not free forever
To be clear: Learnea has no free plan. You get 14 days free, then Starter costs $29 a month ($290 a year) plus 5% of sales, or Pro $79 a month ($790 a year) plus 2%. Stripe's card fees of 2.9% + 30¢ per payment apply on top.
What you get from Starter: unlimited members, courses and videos, a community feed, private messaging, points, levels and a leaderboard, an About page, video up to 1080p, and monthly, yearly or one-time payments with a second offer. Learnea does not include email marketing, sales funnels, a native mobile app or built-in video calls.
Which route fits you
- No budget and no audience yet: a free plan such as Systeme.io's gives you time without a monthly bill, within its limits (1 community, 1 course, $10,000 in total sales).
- You mostly need a checkout: Whop's pay-as-you-go pricing is light at low volume; check that its community and course tools cover what you need.
- A fan membership more than a course: Patreon is free to start but takes 10% plus fees.
- A community with courses, on a small budget: Skool Hobby at $9 a month is the lowest subscription among the community platforms above.
- A community with courses and gamification, a lower cut than 10%, and a plan to grow past $1,333 a month: try Learnea for 14 days.
